Welcome to English III, a study of American literature. In his 1838 Lyceum Address, Abraham Lincoln observed that, "Towering genius disdains a beaten path. It seeks regions hitherto unexplored." With that adventurous spirit in mind, we will explore the minds of great American authors to discover the evolution and the true meaning of the American Dream, the American Journey, and the American Hero.
Through reading primarily American Literature, students in English III focus on the N.C. essential standards for reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language. Students should expect assignments that reinforce classroom instruction. Additionally, students will be required to read outside of class as part of this course. Writing instruction focuses on mechanical correctness, fluency, and structure. Students will focus on writing literary analysis, argumentative essays, and personal narratives. Students are expected to function at grade level in communication and thinking skills, and these skills will be reinforced through participation in debate, discussion boards, narrative and argumentative writing, and digital publication.
Is everyone ready? On your mark. Get set. Go!
